Addiction Recover Treatment & Aftercare Programs
Recovery is a developmental process that involves the mind, body, soul, and spirit of the recovering physician. Relapse is a disruption in this process. Sustainable recovery occurs when the individual gains insight into and honestly addresses those aspects of personality – judgment, decision making, attitudes, distress tolerance, and relationship patterns – that persistently derail well-being. This program is designed for physicians who have already undergone 60-90 days of primary addictions treatment but have engaged relapse behaviors and/or returned to using substances or are now engaged in a compulsive pattern of cross-addiction. The focus of this program is to diligently resolve the physician's personality variables that derail genuine recovery and alliance with monitoring.
Addictions Treatment Aftercare Program
This program is designed for physicians who have recenlty completed primary treatment but need extra help to address and resolve personality problems that interfere with a sustained, active, and principle-based program of recovery. Many physicians with personality disorders have a difficult time embracing the need for monitoring, forming amiable relations with their physician health program and their medical board, and adjusting their identity around the concepts of powerlessness and accountability. Our experience in working with physicians who have co-morbid personality and addiction disorders make us a useful augmentation resource to primary addiction treatment to support the best possible recovery outcome. We strive to support the good work that has already been completed during primary treament. The goals of our aftercare program are to build on the successes and sobriety achieved in treatment while positively altering engrained, maladaptive personality vulnerabilities, resistance to change, and cognitive distortions that contribute to relapse and regulatory non-compliance.
The Addiction Recovery and Addictions Treatment Aftercare Programs are integrated to provide a breadth of peer recovery experience to enhance each participant's experience. Both programs are structured around a three-week immersion process with three stages of episodic follow-up over a period of one year.
The treatment focuses on
- Identifying engrained personality factors that precipitate relapse
- Facilitating the ability to be 'mindful' of positive and negative psychological experiences
- Reengaging neglected value-based principles in the service of meaningful personal integrity and character
- Internalizing adaptive self-regulation skils to manage distress
- Establishing a collaboratiive alliance with the monitoring process
- Developing a sophisticated insight into one's vulnerabilites and strengths to create a substantive relapse prevention plan.
Throughout the year the physician also participates in coordinated local individual psychotherapy, 12-step meetings with active sponsoring, and physician health program monitoring.
