Episodic Professional Coaching Process
This program is designed as an early intervention for those who have been identified as distressed or disruptive in the workplace. Participants who do not require intervention at the level of day treatment, residential, or inpatient program but who do require longitudinal reinforcement for behavioral change are appropriate referrals. In general, this physician population is not impaired by a primary psychiatric diagnosis, but the physician’s personality and other contextual dynamics hinder congenial workplace interactions, create distress, and stunt professional development.
The objective of this program is to prevent the progression of disruption by teaching physicians how to master the art of becoming a 21st century healthcare provider by:
- Learning how to be an empathic leader across multiple domains and contexts when interacting with staff, patients and their families, administrative bodies, and physician colleagues
- Developing cognitive protocols and emotional regulation skills to practice with diplomacy and discretion
- Mindfulness training to promote reflective and authoritative functioning
- Gaining insight into personality vulnerabilities and strengths to adaptively navigate under internal and external sources of stress
This program is structured around four, 2 day seminars equally distributed over a period of one year. The physician meets with a primary coach as well as a secondary skills trainer, who is selected to address specific short-comings. A didactic/discussion workgroup and a daily process group round out the program. During the follow-up seminars, the physician consolidates gains, acquires more advanced and sophisticated modes of leadership to employ, polishes interpersonal skills, utilizes his peers and staff as problem solving consultants, and more clearly defines professional/developmental goals.
