PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARY TRAINING
Professional Boundary Training for Medical Professionals
Managing professional boundaries in the workplace is easier said than done. Interpersonal dynamics with patients, co-workers, colleagues, and social acquaintances can become compromised under duress. Individual vulnerabilities, misperceptions, “good intentions”, and the culture within the workplace can contribute to lapses in maintaining appropriate boundaries.
Our professional training/coaching workshop is a highly individualized, thought-provoking process aimed at helping physicians not only change their behavior but also adjust their perceptions of themselves and others.
Check with your state medical board, hospital setting or provincial college in advance to inquire about receiving official credit for this 2-day workshop.
The boundary training/coaching workshop at Acumen Institute addresses these challenges by helping each participant:
-
Internalize a conceptual framework (Acumen’s Boundary Field Theory) to understand the complexity of roles and relationships dynamics within one’s profession
-
Utilize this conceptual framework to bring to life the America Medical Association’s practice guidelines, state board regulatory requirements, and the Federation of State Medical Board’s policies regarding boundaries matters associated with sexual misconduct
-
Identify and execute appropriate role function (treating physician), role-related tasks (diagnosis and treatment), and role-related fiduciary duties (ethical and legal factors) in any given context
-
Identify personal vulnerabilities and/or deviations in practice as problematic symptoms that require understanding, attention, and accountability
-
Increase one’s awareness to everyday challenges related to managing personal vs. professional boundaries (i.e., transference/countertransference)
-
Implement a personalized risk-management assessment and action plan to lower one’s vulnerability to boundary problems in the future
